Two deserving seniors won free rent recently through Holiday retirement’s national Freedom Days promotion.

Allen Ehlers, 72, of Del Rio, Texas won one year of free rent on July 17 and Chattanooga, Tenn. resident Brenda Haney, 62, won five years of free rent on July 19. During the Freedom Days promotion, seniors who tour a Holiday Retirement community receive a scratch-off card for the chance to instantly win up to five years of free rent. The promotion continues until September 30, 2010.

Ehlers won after touring Copley Place in Copley, Ohio while visiting his son Timothy. Allen and his wife Charlene are the founders and directors of Faith Mission International in Del Rio and have conducted missionary work in Acuña, Mexico through the organization since 1963. The Ehlers organize the distribution of approximately 1 million pounds of food per year, have started 20 churches, and have built 70 houses in the last seven years.

““They are amazing people who have given so much of their lives to others,” said Copley Place’s co-manager Loretta Carris. “What a way to have a winner.”

Allen stopped at Copley Place on a whim and selected his Freedom Days scratch-off card from a stack he was presented following his tour. He scratched the card while conversing with co-manager Lucille Cochrane, and when he glanced down, he saw he’d instantly won one year of free rent.

“When I finally looked down and read it, she said, ‘You are kidding,’” Allen said. “She got so excited and ran to start making calls.”

He added: “When I told my wife and son, they about went into orbit, and I just broke down and cried. I’ve never won anything in my life.”

The couple plans to relocate to Ohio in the near future while maintaining ties with their friends in Texas through Holiday Retirement’s exclusive travel program, which allows residents to stay free of charge at nearly 300 communities across North America.

“We are so thankful,” Allen said. “We’ve lived in huts in Mexico, rented a house that had paper walls in Japan, slept in people’s front rooms and in our car … this is just a real blessing.”
Haney won after touring Creekside at Shallowford in Chattanooga, Tenn. with her mother Dolores, 82. Brenda retired in 2003 after working for the Tennessee Valley Authority for 29 years. She decided to tour while visiting a friend at the community. She was given the Freedom Days card prior to the tour and nearly forgot to scratch it.

“After the tour, we thanked them and were about to leave, but they reminded us to scratch the cards,” Brenda said. “I didn’t have anything to scratch with, so I borrowed one of the manager’s keys. When I was scratching mine off, I just couldn’t believe my eyes. I turned it around and asked, ‘Is this for real?’”

Brenda and Dolores plan to join their friends at Creekside at Shallowford in the near future.

“It was like a dream,” Brenda said. “It’s one of the most exciting things to ever happen to me. I didn’t sleep a wink that night, and we still can’t believe it. We feel so blessed to have the opportunity to be offered something like this. We just loved Creekside.”
